Over the past 100 years, Xiamen University(XMU) has unswervingly committed herself to self-development in the pursuit of excellence, and has established as a world-class institution of higher education. Since the release of the first announcement of XMU’S centenary celebration, XMU faculty, students and alumni both at home and abroad, have been filled with excitement and pride in anticipation of the momentous event. Friends from every walk of life have taking an active part in the preparation work with their full support. After carefully considering a wide selection of submitted proposals, we are pleased to announce the theme and logo for the centenary celebration.

To Carry Forward Tan Kah Kee’s Spirit and Distinguish XMU as a World-class University

XMU’s reputation as “the Pride of the South” is thanks in large part to the lasting legacy of Tan Kah Kee’s indomitable spirit. The university’s 100-year history tells a story of overcoming countless difficulties and achieving one triumph after another---— a fitting reflection of Tan Kah Kee’s perseverance and resilience. The faculty and students of XMU will continuously carry forward Tan Kah Kee’s Spirit, aspire to contribute to the betterment of society, and build a community of shared future for mankind. Guided by the motto “Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection”, XMU will embark on a new journey, full rejuvenated, as she strives to attain new heights and distinguish herself as a “world-class university with Chinese characteristics”.

1. The Logo for XMU’s Centenary Celebration

   

The logo echoes the distinctive Tan Kah Kee architectural style and XMU’s 100-year history. The iconic XMU buildings—Qunxian Complex and Jiannan Complex were designed by the founder Tan Kah Kee himself, combining styles, eastern and western, ancient and modern, the arch symbolizes the land of China, which has nurtured and supported XMU from the very beginning, and it also implies vast oceans in which XMU is braving wind and waves to attain recognition as a world-class university.
